A migrant died in the Channel Tunnel while attempting to cross from France to Britain by stowing away on a freight truck, tunnel operator Eurotunnel said Tuesday.
Staff found “a migrant who was deceased” on a freight truck at about 5 a.m., the company said, causing delays on all services until midday. There was no information about the dead man’s nationality or identity.
This is the second such incident in two weeks, following the death of an Eritrean man on the French side of tunnel while he was trying to board a moving freight train bound for the U.K.
Thousands of migrants are currently camped around Calais waiting for an opportunity to make the crossing to Britain while avoiding strict migration controls by stowing away on freight trucks before they board trains.
Train operator Eurostar said the incident “had a knock-on effect on our services, which experienced some delays this morning, but traffic continues to run and we’re focusing on helping our customers complete their journeys as quickly as possible.”
By 11:43 a.m., Eurotunnel tweeted that the train involved had been removed from the tunnel.
